The kite runner was basically about a man being a jerk his whole life, knowing full well what he is doing the entire time. We know this because he talks about his conscience constantly bothering him throughout the entire novel. And he still continues to act that way despite his conscience. So, in the beginning Amir (the main character) lets his best friend (Hassan), be raped… Never saying a goddamn thing, and acting like it had never happened in the first place. Even though Amir knows that Hassan would do anything for him, in any situation that Amir would be faced with. And it doesn’t stop there, Amir also tried to get Hassan’s father fired, by framing him for stealing his watch his father got him for his birthday and also money that he received at his birthday party. Amir thought that since his father believed that stealing was the worst sin, his father wouldn’t forgive him. But his father did, immediately. Amir’s father seems to be the complete opposite of his father. This doesn’t make much sense because throughout the novel it’s very apparent that his father is loved by all because of his kind heart. All that Amir ever focuses on are the negative qualities of his father, and it’s not even till his father's death that he realizes what an amazing man he was. And perhaps it’s because of all the toxic masculinity that his father pushed onto Amir, but he helped so many people and had so much pride and love for everyone he met, that should never be overlooked.
